Kings 101

Goliath
The Kingdom of Gilboa is in the midst of war when one soldier's heroism brings about the chance for peace.

Gilboa is ruled by King Silas. He keeps telling the story of butterflies as a sign from God that he is king. Currently, his country is at war with Gath and he's adamant that he won't give in to their demands even at the cost of his son, Jack. Jack and his men were ambushed at the border. A soldier named David takes it upon himself to save the captured men in defiance of his commander's orders. During this successful excursion, he is photographed by a fellow soldier facing a Goliath, one of Gath's tanks, and survives. David receives a hero's welcome at Shiloh, Gilboa's capital, courtesy of the royal family. He meets Princess Michelle, Silas' beloved daughter. As Silas watches the two dance, he comments to his right hand man that the kingdom needs someone like David. The next morning, Silas promotes David to captain and becomes the new military liaison to the press.

When I first saw this show's premiere, I was bored at some points. It has great cinematography and music. The dialogue, lofty at times, is really important because if you don't pay attention, you'll miss something. The most interesting characters are Silas Benjamin and his son, Jack.

Silas is a very ruthless man when it comes to preserving his rule. He orders the death of one of his ministers just because he didn't agree to his ideas concerning Gath. I missed this order on the first viewing. It's also revealed in the premiere that Jack's ambush was planned. According to Reverend Samuels, Silas' actions made him lose God's favor. It's emphasized by the end of the episode when Silas sees David with a crown of living butterflies.
My favorite scene is between Silas and Jack. A drunk Jack is bitter that he was pulled out of the frontlines and reassigned to a desk job while David becomes a captain. He assures Silas that his playboy reputation doesn't matter when it comes to doing his job. Silas fires back that he wishes his son was really a playboy. He reveals that he knows Jack's secret and that this would bring shame to the monarchy specially since he's the first-born son. Silas wants Jack to reign in his urges as proof that he is worthy to be the next king. Great performance from both actors in this scene.
Silas has a secret of his own, he has another family. He married Rose so that he could be king with financial backing from his brother-in-law William. who wants the war with Gath to continue because his company, Cross Gen, has a huge investment in the military. Since peace is imminent, William wants Jack's loyalty before deposing Silas.
Another Benjamin, Queen Rose, shows her manipulative ways. It was subtle that I wondered if I interpreted her actions correctly. She loses her cellphone and for most of the episode, it's constantly mentioned. She's sure that she gave it to the new secretary. The item surfaces at the same time Rose is talking to a journalist. In the end, the incident helps solidify Jack's playboy reputation. It seems like Jack is Rose's favorite.
So far, David is the "good" character, well Michelle too since it's very clear that theyr'e going to pair up.
