I enjoyed the hour immensely. The show is about a Spanish teacher who takes over the glee club. The school isn't supportive of his endeavor that he has to make deals with the principal to keep it afloat. The club only has five members and they have a long road ahead of them until regionals.
The adults are hilarious albeit dysfunctional but they kept my interest because their characters are distinct. My favorite is the cheerleader coach, Sue Sylvester. She has the best lines in the episode. The kids are okay so far. I like the female lead singer, Rachel Berry, because she reminds me so much of Reese Witherspoon's character in
Election. She knows she's a good singer and reminds everyone of her greatness, even posting her singing at her MySpace page. The quarterback also has an in depth look at his character. Hopefully, when the show returns in the fall, the other glee members will have character development. Actually, I want even the faculty to have their characters developed. Pop culture references I noticed: Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Justin Timberlake, Grey's Anatomy, and the songs.
There are two awesome musical performances in the episode. The glee club goes on a field trip to watch the previous champion perform "Rehab" and it's really good. The other one is by the glee club's performance of "Don't Stop Believin'" at the end of the episode. I hear both versions of the songs are very popular at iTunes at the moment. Episode one is availabe for free on
iTunes and
HULU for a limited time.
Looks like I have something new to watch in the fall and it's in a high school setting.
